Matt Grote, based in Hermosa Beach, California, started skateboarding at age 5 and surfing at age 11. When he moved to San Francisco, he met Mark Andreini, who taught him about surfing history, the world of alternative boards, and shaping. His boards, influenced by various surfers from the shortboard revolution era, are a must-see in California today.
Stubby is a template with an original hull designed by George Greenough, and is well-known as an edge board. The parallel outline and voluminous rails make paddles and takeoffs as fast as possible, and catch the maximum power from weak waves. It is an all-round board that demonstrates the effect of edge bottom when the size of the wave increases.
