Matt Grote, who is based in Hermosa Beach, California, started skateboarding at the age of 5 and surfing at the age of 11. After moving to San Francisco, he met Mark Andreini and learned about the history of surfing, the world of alternative boards, and shaping. His boards, influenced by various surfers from the shortboard revolution era, are a must-see in California today.

Opal is a design derived from George Greenough's kneeboard, and in addition to the glide of a traditional hull, it is characterized by soft maneuverability that can be handled with a light touch. It is useful in a variety of situations, from everyday waves that do not take out a traditional hull to 6-foot reefs and point breaks. If you want to paddle and take off as fast as possible, it can be stretched up to 6'10.
