Dick Van Straalen 7'4 Midlength Fish Impressions

DVS 7'4 Midlength Fish

The third Alternative Mart offline meetup came to a close in a frenzy.

In the blog post reporting the event, he said , "I don't really know what you're talking about."

I'm sure I'll get some criticism, so I'll try to give my impressions calmly.

First of all, this board was brought by Y, a participant of this meetup.

The order date is December 2008.

(DVS Surfboards lists the date the order was received on the board)

In other words, this board is from almost 12 years ago.

Although there are scratches and repair marks here and there,

It is still in good enough condition to function as a surfboard.

The appearance of this board excited all the participants.

Thanks to Mr. Y's kindness, I decided to take it in.

The template for the board itself is based on what is now known as the Classic Fish model.

It is stretched and is 7'4 in length.

The width and thickness are not listed, as per DVS convention.

This is to prevent users from judging a board based on the size alone.

Because DVS hates it.

So I don't know the actual numbers, but the width is about the same as the demo board's 7'4 Twin.

The thickness also feels a little thin.

However, the nose area is much larger than the 7'4 Twin.

The overall buoyancy seems to be about the same.

The rails have few edges, just like the current Classic Fish.

It is slightly thinner than boards that have a deck concave.

The bottom rolls gently and flows towards the tail in a vee-like motion.

The foam is made of conventional PU and the cloth is tinted.

It has an old-school weight to it, but according to Mr. Y,

Apparently it became heavier during the repair process and was previously lighter.

This board also has a fish-like wood keel fin.

It is laminated.

It's not particularly large for the board size.

I was filled with anticipation and immediately got out.

The paddle is fast because of the stability provided by its wide nose.

After this I rode a mid-length from another brand.

A longer board does not necessarily mean a faster paddle.

Even if it is mid-length, various elements are combined

This allows for quick paddle and take-off.

The waves on this day were fast and shoulder-high.

It is difficult to break the wave, and when it breaks, it collapses all at once.

The speed is so fast that an average shortboarder would not be able to keep up.

The 7'4 Twin also shows its true potential here.

If you paddle further ahead in the swell than the 7'4 Twin,

The board catches the wave securely, begins to slide, and takes off.

From there, set up the rail and take a stance in front of the board.

The board moves in sync with the breaking of the waves and doesn't go any further than necessary.

Regular mid-length, concave, and channel boards

Although the board is fast, it is often easy to go too fast.

However, DVS's 7'4 Fish shows no signs of this at all.

Soon the waves started to roll

No rail bites or bottom movement

I was able to make up the tube with peace of mind.

This is not just a mid-length category.

As a surfboard, it is extremely well-made.

This is an indisputable fact.

After that, I made some good runs and

I changed the board to another participant,

The other rider was riding just as well.

Finally, let's compare it with the Twin Fin model of similar length.

The Twin Fin model has a strong rocker and is good at vertical movement.

It is also strong against hollow waves and waves with short shoulders.

MidlengthFish can handle deep waves and thicker waves.

The movement of the board is mainly horizontal,

The surface is smooth and it is best suited for long shoulder waves.

When ordering Midlength Fish, the material is

A PU that makes use of the weight of the board would be good.

Also, in the case of DVS, there is no such thing as a color charge.

You can choose a beautiful tint finish that makes the most of the PU material.

This is just my opinion.

Boards that are easy for everyone to use and boards for tubes

The common sense that they are incompatible

This means that DVS had already overturned this rule more than 10 years ago.

It is these facts that make him known as a master craftsman.

This is why it continues to attract enthusiastic support even today.
